Soy Artista

Soy Artista is a language-based sound art piece (3-channel audio with effects) performed at the Doctor of Musical Arts Performer-Composer Showcase Concert at California Institute of the Arts on October 22, 2024.

The work is documentation of my personal study of the Spanish language expressed through writing and audio-recorded speech about my artistic identity. The original purpose of the project was to connect my efforts to becoming fluent in the Spanish language with critical information about my burgeoning artistic identity. This effort is represented in three voice memos from a 2019 summer journal entry on the theme of what I like the most about my work. Each version of the text & audio highlights strengths and weaknesses within my Spanish writing & speech that are useful for my ongoing personal assessment of my growth in the language.
